Celine Dion's showstopping 'live' performance at the start of the Paris 2024 Olympics was pre-recorded, it was claimed in France today.


Millions were moved to tears when the 56-year-old Canadian superstar sang Hymne à L'amour (Hymn to Love) in front of the Eiffel Tower.

It was the culmination of a lavish Opening Ceremony mainly held along the banks of the River Seine - one that President Emmanuel Macron said was the 'emotional highlight' of the sporting extravaganza.

But on Friday, the highly respected Liberation newspaper quoted multiple music industry experts who said the July 26th performance was 'without a shadow of a doubt' pre-recorded.

In turn, representatives for the Paris 2024 organisers refused to answer questions on the scandal, despite previously insisting that the performance was indeed a live one.

'What we heard on TV was a corrected playback,' composer and performer Etienne Guéreau told Liberation.

In comments that were republished across French media, a sound engineer who asked to remain anonymous said: 'It was 100% playback, you can hear it from the first notes.'

Others said it was 'without a shadow of a doubt' pre-recorded, as was a performance by Ms Dion in rehearsals.

A YouTuber musician who uses the name Wings of Pegasus said the rehearsal and actual performance also sounded exactly the same - something that is technically impossible, as there will always be variations between any two versions of a live song.

The Olympics performance was meant to be a triumphant comeback for Ms Dion, who has been battling the incurable stiff-person syndrome.

Hymne à L'amour was chosen because it was originally sung by the late French music icon Edith Piaf.

Thousands of fans took to social media to praise Ms Dion, whose greatest hits include 'My Heart Will Go On', the theme from the Titanic movie.

One said: 'Ok I'm proper emotional at Celine's performance, just wow!', while another gushed: 'Queen Celine is back and she sounds fantastic'.

It was in 2022 that Ms Dion disclosed that she had been diagnosed with the neurological disorder stiff-person syndrome which causes muscles to stiffen and spasm.

She then made a vow to return to the stage 'even if I have to crawl', adding: 'My goal is to see the Eiffel Tower again!'

Around 104,000 people paid for tickets to watch the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony live, with the best seats costing more than £2500.

Despite heavy rain, many sat through multiple acts, including a pre-recorded one by Lady Gaga, which was shown on multiple screens along the river, as well as around the world.

But Ms Dion's performance was meant to be a live one, and it has just been released as such on various streaming platforms.

Ms Dion announced on Instagram on Thursday that the 'live' recording was available on sites such as YouTube and Spotify.

These are Piaf's words to the love of her life, French-Algerian boxer Marcel Cerdan, who died in a plane crash in October 1949.

French president Emmanuel Macron spoke about the Dion Olympics performance in an interview with Variety magazine this week, saying it caused the 'biggest emotion' of all at Paris 2024.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn't refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn't come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back. And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy's. It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.

Until last year, when she reopened as a members' club in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome - albeit near empty - dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don't speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We're looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen', we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth. I'd eat this every day if I could. But I can't. Obviously. That's the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers 'incredible' deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.


The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.

Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works to provide support and assistance to people in need.

The grisly film - made for about $2 million - stars Thornton as homicidal clown Art who brutally murders an array of victims in stomach churning scenes - with the film knocking the starry Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga film off the top of the US box office last week.



Thornton said the runaway success of his film had left him stunned as he likened to battle of the two films to 'David vs Goliath.' 

He told TMZ: 'Terrifier 3 was a small lower budget independent film... I never expected this to happen in my life, I'm floored and grateful for it all.

'We're grateful to the fans, we have a dedicated fanbase, we weren't beholden to the studio system.

Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ


'This shows Hollywood that we need to start making movies that take risks again.

The star said he had yet to see the panned Joker sequel, saying: 'I was shocked too as the first Joker film I loved, I'm curious to see why people aren't as crazy about the second one.'    

Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have 'certified' it 'hot' and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.

The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.   

Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad reviews, enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.

The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across the US.

The musical is 'poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run' according to the publication.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying 'Any estimates suggested by anonymous "insiders" or "rival executives" are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.'

'The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week's opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.'

So far, the musical about Batman's nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.
